Dr Stephen Arnold, has recently taken up a Lectureship in Mathematics Education in the Faculty of Education at the University of Newcastle. Stephen, who is an experienced secondary teacher and lecturer in mathematics education, holds two masters degrees. His doctoral thesis was on "Learning to Use New Tools: A Study of Mathematical Software Use for the Learning of Algebra." Stephen's expertise is in the use of computer tools for the teaching and learning of mathematics. He has published widely in State and national journals, and presented workshops and professional development programs both here and overseas.
Dr Wing Au is a Lecturer in the Faculty with a great expertise in the use of computers as tools for learning at all levels. Wing's doctoral thesis was concerned with children's learning through LOGO.
Mr Fred Bishop is Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education. Fred is an experienced teacher and lecturer who specialises in the teaching and learning of mathematics in primary schools. He has been Director of the popular Hunter Region Primary Mathematics Competition for many years, and in 1994 was awarded the prestigious Neumann medal for services to mathematics education in Australia.
Professor Sid Bourke is chair of Faculty's Research Committee, and teaches research methodology subjects (see EDGS525 and EDGS521, in Table 1, above). Although Sid's work tends to have a generic emphasis, he has carried out research in the domain of mathematics education which resulted in a number of important publications.
Professor M. A. ("Ken") Clements was the elected President of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) between 1987 and 1993. Ken is an honorary life member of MERGA, and also an honorary life member of the Mathematical Association of Victoria. He is the author or editor of numerous books and articles on mathematics education, and has supervised many masters and doctoral students in mathematics education. Before coming to Newcastle (in 1993) Ken taught in schools for a total of 14 year, and was at Deakin University (1987-1993) and Monash University (1974-1982).
Ms Wendy Hawthorne took up her Lectureship in the Faculty in 1994, after being a Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Education at the Northern Territory University. Wendy, who was elected as Head of the Early Childhood Course Committee for 1995, is currently completing her doctoral studies in early childhood mathematics education.
