Getting to Know the Mathematics Education Literatures
The subject will focus on issues arising from Polya, Krutetskii and the Restaurant Problem and from other readings to which reference is made in the course notes. However, at the outset we would emphasise that we expect you to read widely, especially articles in major mathematics education research journals such as:
Educational Studies in Mathematics
Journal for Research in Mathematics Education
For the Learning of Mathematics
Journal of Mathematical Behaviour
International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology
School Science and Mathematics
Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics
Mathematics Education Research Journal
The following mathematics teaching journals should also be consulted:
Reflections
Vinculum
Prime Number
Australian Mathematics Teacher
Australian Senior Mathematics Teacher
Mathematics Teaching
Mathematics in School
The Arithmetic Teacher
The Mathematics Teacher
While the University of Newcastle Library subscribes to the above-named journals, complete issues cannot be borrowed. Many of these journals can be found in the libraries of other tertiary institutions around Australia.
The annual December conference book published by the Mathematical Association of Victoria, the biennial conference book published by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, and the proceedings of the annual conferences of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME) invariably contain important articles. They also provide the reader with a "feel" for what is happening in mathematics and mathematics education around the world.
