Viewing the GRAPHS of the various equations may help you to understand what is happening here.

How might we view the graph of x2 = 4?

We may choose to plot equations such as x2 = 4 by plotting both sides individually. This gives the parabola y = x2 crossing the horizontal line y = 4 at two points.
